How to Make Objections
Scott County Courthouse, Winchester, Illinois 1885
- Objection must be timely
- Object to the question before the answer
- Object to the answer as soon as you realize the testimony is objectionable
- Object to the document when used or offered
- Rise and say, “Objection”
- State the rule (hearsay, relevancy, etc.) and, if necessary, very briefly, the grounds .
- Do not argue the objection yet, but be prepared to argue
- The court should give the other side a chance to respond first
- If the court looks back to you then give your argument
- Accept the court’s ruling gracefully.
