Student Safety

Student Safety

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.   Benjamin Franklin

Things to Consider

  • Coaches and volunteer parents must complete criminal background checks with the school district
  • Van drivers must be certified in advance
  • Do a head count when traveling to and from an event
  • Many school districts require online classes in coaching, abuse, and sexual harassment
    • Check with your district
    • Consider taking these classes even if not expressly required
  • First aid certification is a plus
  • School districts have become very sensitive to sexual harassment and possible grooming behavior.  A few rules to follow:
    • Keep all contact professional
    • Do not meet with students one on one privately, or if you do make it in a public place with the doors open
    • Do not pick students up or drive them home without their parents’ permission
    • Group e-mails are best
    • If you have correspondence with an individual student send a copy of all e-mail correspondence to the teacher sponsor to keep them in the loop
    • Treat all students fairly and equally
