Student Safety
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Benjamin Franklin
Things to Consider
- Coaches and volunteer parents must complete criminal background checks with the school district
- Van drivers must be certified in advance
- Do a head count when traveling to and from an event
- Many school districts require online classes in coaching, abuse, and sexual harassment
- Check with your district
- Consider taking these classes even if not expressly required
- First aid certification is a plus
- School districts have become very sensitive to sexual harassment and possible grooming behavior. A few rules to follow:
- Keep all contact professional
- Do not meet with students one on one privately, or if you do make it in a public place with the doors open
- Do not pick students up or drive them home without their parents’ permission
- Group e-mails are best
- If you have correspondence with an individual student send a copy of all e-mail correspondence to the teacher sponsor to keep them in the loop
- Treat all students fairly and equally
